How to use

Choose a pot with drainage holes.

Position your plant and gently fill around the roots without packing the mix tightly.

Water thoroughly until excess water drains from the pot.

Then allow the growing medium to dry to a level that’s appropriate for your plant before watering again.

Watering Tips

One of the most common mistakes with cacti and succulents is watering too often.

How quickly the mix dries depends on the plant, pot size, light, temperature and humidity.

Instead of watering on a schedule, check the growing medium first. Water thoroughly, allow excess water to drain away, then wait until the mix has dried appropriately before watering again.

Can I use this for leaf or stem propagation?

Yes. Many growers use this mix for propagating succulent leaves, pads and stem cuttings. Depending on the species, allow cuttings to callous before planting.

Can I make the mix even grittier?

Absolutely. The mix is ready to use straight from the bag, but if you’re growing particularly sensitive species or gardening in a very humid environment, you can add extra pumice or lava rock to increase drainage even further.

Can I use this for Christmas Cactus or Easter Cactus?

Yes, but these jungle cacti naturally prefer a little more moisture than most desert cacti. If you’d like a slightly finer mix with increased moisture retention, blend in some of our Premium General Purpose & Seed Mix.

Can I reuse the mix?

Yes. Many of the mineral ingredients, including akadama, pumice and lava rock, last much longer than traditional potting soil. If the mix is still in good condition, remove old roots and organic debris, then clean and sterilize it before reusing. Replace any material that has noticeably broken down.
