Our Premium Carnivorous Potting Mix is made to recreate those conditions using a simple blend of carefully selected ingredients that provide moisture retention, drainage and aeration without added fertilizer.

Most potting soils are made to feed plants.

Carnivorous plants are different.

Species like Venus Flytraps, Sundews and Sarracenia have adapted to nutrient-poor environments and can be damaged by fertilizers or nutrient-rich potting soils.

That’s why our Carnivorous Mix contains no added fertilizer or nutrient-rich amendments.

Just the ingredients needed to create the growing conditions these unique plants prefer.

Is this the right mix for my plant?

Our Premium Carnivorous Potting Mix was made to be a versatile growing medium for many of the most popular carnivorous plants.

For bog-loving species such as Venus Flytraps, Sarracenia and Sundews, it’s ready to use straight from the bag.

We’ve also had great success growing Nepenthes in this mix. Since many tropical pitcher plants prefer a lighter, more open growing medium, we recommend adding extra long fibre sphagnum moss to better suit their growing habits.

For temperate Butterworts (Pinguicula), this mix works well.

For Mexican and many tropical Butterworts, we generally recommend our Premium Semi-PON Lava Mix, or a blend incorporating it, as these species typically prefer a much more mineral-rich, sharply draining growing medium.

Some experienced growers also use our Premium Orchid Potting Mix for Nepenthes because of its coarse, airy structure. However, it contains controlled-release fertilizer, so we recommend it only for growers who are comfortable feeding Nepenthes through the roots.

Not every carnivorous plant grows in the same environment, and we think it’s important to recommend the right mix for the species you’re growing.

How to use

Watering Tips

The right water is just as important as the right soil.

Many carnivorous plants are sensitive to dissolved minerals commonly found in tap water.

If you’re unsure about your water quality, measure its Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). We generally recommend using water below 50 ppm, with even lower levels preferred for the most sensitive species. Distilled water, reverse osmosis water or clean rainwater are usually the safest choices.

Yes. We’ve had great success growing Nepenthes in this mix. Many growers choose to add extra long fibre sphagnum moss to create a lighter, airier blend, especially for species that prefer additional airflow around the roots.

Can I use this for Butterworts?

That depends on the type. Temperate Butterworts grow well in this mix. Mexican and many tropical Butterworts generally perform better in a more mineral-rich growing medium, such as our Premium Semi-PON Lava Mix.

Can I use tap water?
